To ensure maximum performance and prolong the life of a golf cart, proper battery maintenance is a good idea. Some people get professionals to perform golf cart battery mainenance but others prefer to do it themselves. If you are planning to do it yourself, make sure you follow the instructions in your golf cart manual and have the proper equipment such as goggles, voltmeter, a wrench, hydrometer, gloves and petroleum jelly.
Golf cart batteries are acidic and should be treated with care. In case of any acid spills, having baking soda and water in your reach is also a good idea. Here are some of the things you should do when checking your golf cart battery:
1. Look for visible faults such as cracks. If there are any cracks on your battery, it is a sign that the battery will need to be replaced to prevent acid spillage in the future which could ruin the entire vehicle.
2. Clean dirt on surface of battery. If there is any accumulation of dirt on the battery, use a cloth with some baking soda and water to gently wipe the surface. You can also clean the battery terminals and cable clamps inside by first disconnecting them.
3. Check you battery water levels. If your battery water level is low, refill it using distilled water back to the top.
