If you golf then you are familiar with the etiquette of the game. “Quiet on the green,” is a something you know, understand and respect. Everyone wants to golf their best, including you, so you respect the rules of the game. When it comes to driving a golf cart on the course, it would be no different. You would act appropriately or else you might risk getting kicked out of the country club. Today, however, more and more people are operating golf carts than just golfers. These golf carts that are usually driven around town are sometimes referred to as, “Neighborhood Electric Vehicles.” What is the etiquette or more specifically the laws regarding use of these vehicles? If you own an NEV here is what you need to know regarding state laws:
1. Any slow moving vehicles must not be able to travel more than 35 mph. 2. The maximum seating for the cart is 4 people. 3. It cannot weigh more than 2200 pounds. 4. The cart needs a headlight, front turn lamps, rear turn lamps, tail lamps, and stop lamps. 5. Must have reflex reflectors, exterior mirrors, and an interior mirror. 6. Must have brakes, a windshield, and a VIN. 7. Each seat needs a seat belt. 8. The cart needs a manufacturer’s certificate of origin stating that it is a low speed vehicle.
If you can meet the above requirements, than you are safe to drive on the road!
