Laws About Golf Carts: Know What Your Area Requires

When I was in high school I was in charge of planning the homecoming halftime show. It was one of the biggest festivities of the year where the homecoming queen would be announced. We wanted to drive in the homecoming court on cars, however our school’s code would not allow it. So, we got approval to drive the girls in on golf carts that were loaned from the local golf course. Ironically, today we are not worried about where you can drive a car; we are worried about where you can drive a golf cart. Why? Today, more and more people are purchasing golf carts for transportation use. For many areas, it is actually legal to drive a golf cart.

Many are concerned with these news laws because apparently you only have to be 14 to drive a golf cart. Given the conflict with that age limit and the driver’s license age limit, cities are working to deal with the legal issues involved regarding the issue. The hope is that new laws will require all golf cart operators to be 16. This way, the age requirement can be proved, and, in areas where driving on the road is legal, problems or questions will not occur. If you are above the age limit, check with your city to see where it is legal to drive your golf cart.
